The union of Adobe and Aldus Corp. has put a couple of products in jeopardy.
It seems unlikely that the merged company would continue to support two drawing packages, or two photo-editing applications. Since Adobe has developed PhotoShop and Illustrator internally, they would probably be retained, while Freehand and PhotoStyler, which are licensed from their developers by Aldus, would go.
Undoubtedly Aldus' Paul Brainerd is in for some tough discussions with Adobe's John Warnock and Chuck Geschke.
Because Adobe's PhotoShop is a latecomer to the Windows environment, I have become familiar with Aldus' PhotoStyler, which has proven itself through versions one and two. We did breathe a sigh of relief when we started to use PhotoShop 2.5 -- its channel manipulation capabilities, and the resulting effects, are difficult or impossible to duplicate with any other software.
It has other big and little advantages, but then so does PhotoStyler.
I find all photo-editing programs have large and confusing on-screen tool palettes, although this may simply be a personal reaction to using more than one.
Although PhotoStyler's modal palette (it switches icons depending on your mode) is interesting, I can never figure out where I am. My check list of preferred features comparing the two programs seemed to focus on dialogue boxes: "The PhotoStyler File/Open dialog is better because ..."
As a result we've given our discussion thread a name: "The battle of the photo-editing dialog boxes." Hopefully Adobe/Aldus can take a hint.
PhotoStyler has better File/Open, Save and Print dialogs. They are far superior, and not just to PhotoShop.
When printing, PhotoStyler gives control over size and positioning of the image on the page, with an interactive preview. It makes you wish every application could be so flexible and understanding at print time. Only Corel has a better print dialogue.
When opening a file, PhotoStyler provides a preview of the image, and to spare the memory-challenging Photo-CD import, allows cropping before the image is opened.

This handy little visual file manager gives fast visual access to any image.
In both categories PhotoShop is bare and devoid of features.
PhotoShop does have two magnificent image tuning dialog boxes. The well-publicized "variations" (Image/Adjust/Variations) seems to show up in every How to make quick money runescape ad and review.
In a dialogue box with up to 12 preview images, you can make adjustments to independent shadow, midtone and highlight controls, at settings varying from fine to coarse.
If you are having a color balance problem, this allows you to choose the best looking image from the preview and proceed.
The Image/Tune/Color Balance in Photostyler is clumsy in comparison.
PhotoShop also has the equally useful but less spectacular Image/Adjust/Levels.
If a quick click on the "auto" button in this dialog box doesn't improve your image dramatically, feel free to try other adjustments interactively.
Other photo-editing software make this confusing, but here it is crystal clear.
I wouldn't admit to understanding the histogram display, but the slider controls are very simple to manipulate.
At last I understand how gamma (mid-grey point) adjustments work.
PhotoStyler offers dialogue box control over several effects with interactive previews, where PhotoShop does not.
For example, in the PhotoStyler "sharpen" dialogue, you can choose from five levels of sharpen.

I'll open a large image in PhotoStyler to reduce the image size by cropping before opening.
Switching to PhotoShop, I fine-tune my cropping (PhotoStyler crops only by cut and paste), and then adjust levels. It's back to PhotoStyler for sharpening and then printing. I don't know if I could manage with just one.
So John, Paul and Chuck, let PhotoStyler fall if you must, but not before you incorporate some of its best features, and give us a to-die-for photo-editing application.
